When we go Christmas shopping, we generally have two experiences: We either clearly know what to get for the person because we know what that person would enjoy and find it easily. Alternatively, we have a foggy idea because we are not sure what the person wants and end up spending hours tracking down a present that in the end may not have much meaning to the person.
Which experience do you prefer?
Most people prefer the first one, because it is more satisfying to go after a goal that is clear. We know what we want and can go after it.
When pursuing life goals, many of us don’t have a lot of clarity as to what specifically we want to achieve. We have vague ideas, but rarely stop and truly clarify our goals. We say things like; “I would like to have a great job.” But we don’t get clear on what that means. A great job can mean a variety of things and by thinking about it in such a nonspecific way, we don’t really know what to go after.
Maybe we want to work from home. Maybe we want to have flexible hours. Maybe we want to work on creating real change in the world or maybe we want to feel inspired every day. When our goals are foggy, all we attract is more fog.
The first step, then, in creating what we want in our lives is to gain clarity. When our thoughts are focused on the specifics we want we are able to activate energy around us that enables us to reach our goals.
As the year is coming to an end, I invite you to take a few minutes and go through these steps:
• List at least one goal for your career, relationships, finances, health and spirituality
• Close your eyes, and for each goal, ask yourself what it is you want to experience. Notice the details and ask yourself how you want to feel once you have obtained your goal.
• Then open your eyes and write down what it is you want to create.
• Flesh out the details of your goals. The more specific you can be, the clearer your goal will become.
• In the coming days, reflect on your goals on a daily basis to let them settle into your subconscious. Add details to your description as they emerge. Your description can be as long or short as you choose.
It’s amazing what a few minutes of focused attention will reveal and clarify.
