Fostering Employee Engagement Through Vision Board Workshops
Gallup’s 2016 in-depth State of the American Workplace found that only one-third of our 100-million full-time employees are engaged. “At the other end, 16 percent of employees are actively disengaged — they are miserable in the workplace and often, even if unintentionally, destroying what the most engaged employees build.”
This leaves 51 percent of a company’s workers punched in, even though they are likely to have checked out. This also means a stunning 70 percent of our workforce is at best, barely engaged while at work, and showing up just to get a paycheck.
There is hope, however, as the same survey reported that 53 percent of employees say that having a role that allows them to have greater work-life balance and better personal well-being is “very important” to them.
So how can organizations use this information to foster and harness the energy of a more engaged workforce?
Just as the vision you have in creating and/or managing your organization is what helps keep you going, sharing this vision, and encouraging individuals to foster their own, will help lead them to engagement. More specifically, encouraging them to create their own Vision Boards addresses their personal well being by providing them the opportunity to work on the following:
It’s no secret that having clear goals makes achieving our personal and business objectives much more likely. And being clear on what to pursue creates peace of mind. During a vision board session, employees gain clarity about their professional, relationship/family, financial and health-related goals.
More than 100 studies documented studies conclude that creative expression has a powerful impact on health and well-being. Marcel Proust said, “The real art of discovery is not in finding new land, but in seeing with new eyes.” Since Vision Boards encourage and teach team members to create visual images of their goals, they think about things a bit differently and in ways that often provide for unexpected solutions to both old and new problems.
Gallup has found that one of the 12 tenants of fostering employee engagement is “having a best friend at work”. Friendships need room to be built. Vision board workshops offer a social gathering for the teams, during which team members get to know each other’s personal aspirations. Discussion during the workshop is encouraged and all employees share their boards at the end. The boards can be hung in each member’s office space, which further encourages conversation when team members stop by.
Getting all employees aligned with a shared vision is key for high achieving organizations. The organization’s mission will be included in the clarity session, to bring about an alignment of the employees’ goals with the broad vision of the organization. Vision board workshops, thus, deepen the engagement and commitment amongst employees to the organization’s goals.
Why is fostering engaged employees important?
Overall, Gallup found that “ENGAGED employees are more present and productive; they are more attuned to the needs of customers; and they are more observant of processes, standards, and systems. When taken together, the behaviors of highly engaged business units result in 21% greater profitability.”
